I'm pretty sure Doug DeMuro caused the warranties to single handily change for the worse. I'm not kidding either.
I bet he did too! I am not under warranty now but I am taking my car into the dealer in a few weeks and will ask my SA if the warranty has changed lately. They work with the carmax warranties all the time I was previously told. i will come back and update with the answer.

Pretty sure it's way more expensive and covers half as much.

You're correct. Doug did a video on it recently using a later model BMW 7-series as an example. Carmax wanted $9,000 for the same warranty coverage as he had on his Range Rover.
I bought a car from Carmax because I needed one quickly and was having a difficult time finding exactly what I wanted. They had it, though, and it was pretty decent. The price was reasonable. They touted that they thoroughly check out every vehicle and document the review. I found that the brake fluid was low and a few other items were not up to snuff per their checklist. They were just checking the boxes on the car review. All-in-all, it has been a very good car though, so can't complain.
I recently reviewed some of their prices and it appeared that their pricing is better on their later model vehicles. Their older model vehicles appeared overpriced to me.
If you have a trade in for price negotiation and you have the vehicle checked out independently from Carmax, chances are you can do okay.
I bought a vehicle from them in 2004. At the time, their prices were better. The price that I paid was about $2K less than a local dealer for the same make, model and year of car. I went back about five years ago, and I had no idea how much their prices had gone up. I found an SUV that I liked, and we discussed a deal. The salesman told me that the bank wanted a down payment in excess of $1,800 to process the deal. I went home and checked, and the amount of the requested down payment was, to the penny, the amount above retail price that they were selling the vehicle for.
Bought a car from them once. Price was slightly higher, but it was worth it. If it hadn’t gotten totaled in an accident I would probably still be driving it.
Same here a bit pricey but the car was very clean and I didn’t mind paying for a car that hadn’t been in a wreck. Car max has no problem with letting the buyer know the history of the car, etc.
I bought a vehicle from them in July of this year. A 2016 Highlander with only 2500 miles on it. It is still under manufacturer's warranty. The price was below NADA and KBB values by about $500. I am perfectly happy with it and my experience. I didn't sell them my vehicle, though, they low balled me and I was able to sell it for $2K more than what Carmax was offering me.
I have actually bought a few 0.5-1 year old vehicles from them with <15k miles. I ordered them with the colors and options I wanted and had them shipped for about $300-400 extra. The prices were all in line with other dealerships.
If you're going for anything older their prices start getting too high, comparatively speaking.
