I recently bought a car with a sunroof. Nobody in my immediate family has ever had one. I heard that they used to clog at the drains and would leak inside from what I remember on a few friends cars. Others have no problems it seems.

Is there any preventative maintenance or tips to keep it from leaking?

I didn't really set out to get a car with sunroof, but that's what it came with.

Also, is it best not to ever open the sunroof? Or is it better to open or tilt it once in a while, to keep it lubricated and flex the seals? I haven't opened it but once just to see how it works, and don't plan to use it much. But it has been cold out so who knows.

I guess if the seals are rotted replace them? Grease the tracks if they are dry? my 7 year old car sunroof looks and functions like new. To me they aren't really needed to be serviced unless you are leaking or driving in rain with them open where water can make the grease gunk up I reckon.

Is that a new car? Most of my cars had sunroof and none of them ever had a leak. I do open it when the weather is right, or just tilt.
I don't think a new or fairly new car would have leak problems. And I never did any preventative maintenance, but you can read about it here:

BTW:
I don't remember a single thread about leaking sunroof on this forum, so it must be pretty rare occurrence.

Same. Same.

But most of them leaked at some point as they aged. Technology may be better now.

303 Protectant (Brand) is a non oil based liquid product.
Keep it clean.
Others may have a different strategy.

There's nothing to do.
I've never had a sunroof leak and I have one that's 30 years old.
During the summer I open it all the time.

Thanks for the information everyone. The car is a 2016. I don't remember a lot of cars having this issue. But a friend of mine had one that leaked and stained the headliner. I think there were more problems because that sunroof never would close properly and would keep opening when being closed. Plus it made a popping sound like gears were bad or something.

I mainly just wondered if there are drains that have to be kept clean or where they usually are.

I haven't examined it much though to see.

My car's 16 yrs old and the sunroof works perfectly. I've never done anything to it besides open it like twice a year on nice spring days.

I finally had leaks on an 18 year old Lexus I had parked under a tree for several years that shed small debris. With some internet research, cleared the drains successfully.
