No one uses my cars but my wife and myself. Ever.
How desperate must you be for cash to let complete strangers use your car?
Precisely. It's a nice idea but all it takes is one jerk who doesn't respect your property or wrecks it and then you're on the hook for all the repairs and costs (and heaven help you if it was a crash and they decide to sue you since it was your car they wrecked; I'm sure they could try).
I only "share" things I don't mind losing/paying for.
(And I can only imagine how much car insurance costs when you have a bunch of random strangers driving it.)

I don’t think it’s even a desperation move. I think people have the mentality I’ll buy this car, use it, get a car sharing app which will pay for the car therefore I drive free. I win.
I, like you do not allow my car to be driven unless I’m in it. Which has happened exactly once. On a long trip picking up a car for a buddy.

I would be shocked if a regular vehicle insurance policy will cover such incident. For that type of use it’s probably considered commercial use and requires a different type of insurance policy
They arrested 21 people and recovered all the cars so, yes there will people who will “game” the system but these new transportation business models will adapt and mostly figure things out, or not, but things are still early in the game.
FWIW these were not personal cars that owners allowed to be used as rentals. They all belonged to the Car2Go outfit, and are provided by M-B & SmartCar.

true enough, but i have to wonder how many cars that are rented through the turo app have gone missing?
