Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a rack on the top of my car. I need it to be sufficient for both several pairs of skis/snowboards as well as kayaks.

My car is a standard popular Japanese mid-size sedan.

Anybody have any suggestions for the cheapest/most efficient way to get this done and how much it should cost?

Cheapest would be to troll craigslist, and absolutely avoid new. The important part is the bar system and how it attaches to the car. The accessories are easy to come by (most are interchangeable between brands plus lots of generic brands).

I bought 2 sets of ski/board holders (2 boards, 4 skis) for $50 and 2 sets of kayak J-racks for $120 used (bought my Yakima system new with my car in 2004 for bikes).

The cost depends on if you car has rain gutters, roof rails, or nothing.

Once you figure what you need troll craigs list.

Also consider a roof top box...they are handy for carrying the boards / skis / boots.

I have had good luck with

Yakima and Thule make the best racks with applications for most cars and anything you want to carry. I have used them for years, and you will wear out before they do.

As someone else suggests - you can view/order them at REI

Because he might say "Camry" and someone here would find out where he lived and steal his skis and snowboards?

Seriously. If you own an exotic beast such as the Camry you need to keep that information secret.

Good grief, the advice doesn't change based on the car. The car doesn't matter, in the least, it adds nothing to the discussion but has the potential to start a bicker fest over the brand, model, year, etc.... Then again, some people on C-D can find Anything to btch and complain about apparently.
