We have a 5-year old Renault Clio that has less than 30,000km on it. We actually drove a roundtrip from Copenhagen to Fontainebleau France about a month ago. Most of the travel "mileage" was during my last working years. Copenhagen is set up so that everyone has a "supermarket" and some shopping for low-order good less than about 0.25-0.50 km from their place of residence. We walk. Our summer place, next to a series of small lakes, is a 10 minute walk from our flat.
On the other hand, we rent cars, locally, on most vacations to visit rural areas in Europe, and then we do drive a lot.
Even at $5 a gallon, is a trivial amount of money I spend per year on fuel, and even a more trivial amount of my income. So no, not driving less.
This!
One day at work more than covers my entire monthly gas budget for my three vehicles.
My two older cars get 87 since they're both over the 200k mark and just beaters but the new car only gets 91 premium...it has never even sipped less. I'd do higher octane but it's just not available where I am.
Then again, if I cared about the gas I wouldn't be driving a car with 485hp.
When it was time to replace my old car I went with an efficient compact sedan. At the time of purchase gas was at or just below $2 a gallon locally. I’ve been alive long enough to know prices can change. Even with improved fuel economy I still practice fuel saving habits I used when I drove a V6 sedan. Plan my path of travel for the least amount of stops and starts and traffic. Sometimes that meant going at a particular time of the day. Shorter route isn’t always the most efficient. Sometimes a slightly longer distance route will be more efficient and shorter in time. I take my foot off the gas to coast when approaching a stop sign or a traffic light that’s red or about to turn red. If I time it right the red light will turn green before I come to a full stop. I accelerate moderately and lock cruise control to maintain a steady speed when possible. I keep my vehicle empty of junk. Right now in my car is an umbrella, roadside emergency kit, seat cushion riser for wife, tire pressure gage, and small portable air compressor to keep tire pressures at recommended levels.
I don’t let the price of gas stop me from going anywhere, some people get to paranoid about things i enjoy life and don’t worry about trivial stuff like gasoline prices it’s not going to dictate how I’m going to live my life. You’re on this planet for a set amount of time so live your life don’t worry about stuff you can’t control.
Gas did get expensive in 2008 and was $4 a gallon. People drove a lot less. We were in a recession then too though. I think gas will have to climb to $6 for people to change their lifestyles and to really consider fuel economy in their next vehicle. A lot of people order stuff online and get it delivered so staying home more isn’t as difficult.
Yes. I used to go out of town every weekend -- sometimes both days -- driving up to 300 miles total, and am now rethinking those trips and staying home more.
