Niki Lauda died yesterday, at 70.

That he lived that long will tickle anyone who knows about his career, specifically the horrific crash that saw him given the last rites... and he was then back at the wheel for a fourth-place finish six weeks later. Three F1 titles in all.

He was the man. Yeah, various websites have video of that crash, I'm surprised anyone could live through that.

All men die, but not all men truly live. Mr. Lauda truly lived, no doubt about that!

The movie "Rush" is terrific. It didn't do well in the U.S., probably because it deals with F1, but it was quite popular in Europe and the UK. Well worth seeing.

Honestly, I lost interest in F1 after about that era - Lauda, Piquet, Senna, Cosworth engines and the marvelous Tyrell six-wheeler. That was the point when the cars became more and more the focus, with technology replacing so many other elements and reducing drivers (IMHO) to narrowly involved test pilots.

An F1 race now is just about the most boring example of the sport possible.

Me too but don't know why. I can't name a single driver after that bunch. Maybe because I had a Europa back when Andretti and Chapman in his John Player Special were sweeping the races. Had an authentic JPS team jacket. Ah, Ronny Peterson. Here's another name that just popped in my head. I remember waking up at 5am to watch the races. I even went to two Grand Prix in Montreal. Dunno, may it's the age thing. You grow out of stuff.

I was kinda fond of some of the foolishness like Team Hesketh and James Hunt too!

I was very saddened to hear of Niki Lauda's death.

I followed F! very closely back in those days and still look at it now, but with nothing like the same feeling of then or even of a few years ago when they had 'proper' engines, not these whiny hybrids.

One thing that has improved without a shadow of a doubt is safety both in the car and on the track and in the pits. Back in Lauda's driving days and before it was akin to Russian roulette getting behind the wheel of a racing car.

I still have the program from the first GP I attended, the 1966 USGP at Watkins Glen, the number of drivers on the entry list who went on to die in racing accidents is shocking to read in this day and age.

A great man and driver. The trees stopped you back then, not soft barriers.
