Now they are trying to get into the delivery business with robots.

It is only a partnership with a robotics firm, not a venture by Ford itself.

But it does beg the question of why you need a robotic car and a robot to accomplish anything. Why not just give a robot driving skills?

Old Henry Ford partnered with Stout to build the Ford Tri-motor. It was reportedly a reliable airplane. We flew on a 1927 one back in the 1980s.

I built close to 20 houses for Toyota. Just because cars and trucks are the main merchandise doesn't mean they haven't expanded their portfolio into other markets. FWIW, Toyota rents these houses out and is watching the home values go thru the roof. It's been a fabulous investment for them. Probably reap a 75% or better return on the dollar.

Why not? I invest in other things besides rentals. I don't see why a car company can’t invest their money in other ventures besides cars.

Studebaker is still in business.

They were diversified. Only the automotive part went out of business.

AFAIK, all of the major makers are diversified well beyond passenger cars. The OP is interesting, but not evidence of some radical new direction for Ford.

Maybe it's a backup plan, just in case their "We'll stop building cars and only build trucks. What could go wrong?" plan goes sideways.

Ford has a long proud history. They are in the transportation business. It is not myopic to focus on the business that you know the best.
