Went out yesterday to go to town and the vehicle was deader than a doornail. No warning previously, no problems at all it seems. I didn't leave the lights on...
The battery was dead. They tested it at AutoZone and it was dead. What the heck? Do batteries normally just die like that....boom, dead?

So common we replace our batteries every fourth year. They always fail in the SW climate between 4th and 6th year. Much easier to replace than the nuisance.
Yup. Had one do that when I was on vacation. Just parked the truck. Went back to go get food. Dead. Lights weren't left on Had to call AAA got jumped went and bought battery. Tested it. It just died. Usually factory batteries do it. Most give you hard starting slow cranking warning

Yes, it happens. Actually, as often as not, you have very little to no warning before a battery takes a dump on you.
Yep, had an '04 Durango. In 2008 we parked up, went into Lowes, came out 15 minutes later and it was completely dead. No warning. Just upped and left town.

They can give out anytime, very quickly. Mine went out last month. I went to start the vehicle one morning, nothing, dead. The battery was 7 years old. Dealer said I was lucky it lasted so long. My other vehicle's 5 year old battery went dead instantly last year also in the am. It must be those overnight droids roaming the neighborhood after dark.
Sure I have one that won't pass the test, but still starts. If I was keeping the car I would replace it. It still cranks on very cold days though so it stays.
It can go both ways... some just get weak over time and others suffer total failure... and others go dead because of something like leaving the lights on and never really recover.
Batteries are made of cells that are connected... all it takes is one connection to separate or a build up on the bottom of the case for failure.
Mom bought a new Corolla in 2001 and just replaced the OEM battery the first part of this year... so 12 years without problems... I noticed the cranking was slower and load test determined there was little left... this was a Delco with the Green Eye....
