Can't find it anywhere

I bought car in OR with salvage title. I made it road worthy and thinking to take to West Coast trip all the way to California asap, however title in OR will come only in 6 weeks. I can buy trip permit for this period however i'm not sure if it is legal to use this permit in California.
Are my concerns correct? Can/should i visit California DMV to get something there?

Did you check the California DMV website regarding out of state transit permits? Not sure anyone on this more general subforum would know.

I'm not familiar with OR law, however I am with CA vehicle code and dmv processes.

If the car is reg'd in OR (either with a one way trip permit or otherwise), you're legal in CA until the permit expires or otherwise becomes invalid (i.e. no longer traveling from point a to point b). Interestingly, the OR DMV website says their permit is for trips "within Oregon", however not sure how legal that is. You'll need to verify.

If you want to be covered, you can apply for a CA REG 402 or "TOP", which allows for "one continuous trip", including from placed outside of CA.

BTW - are you positive you can register this car in CA once you get there? I.e., it'll smog, etg.

1) you mention Oregon title... Is that your intended state of registration?
2) is California your destination, or just a side trip?
3) is your legal DL and address Oregon, or CA?

If you are Oregon based, as is the vehicle, (and Oregon insured... required for vehicle registration) you are pretty safe to travel to CA for an excursion using your 30 day Oregon permit (awaiting title).

If you are CA licensed / resident / car will be registered there.... You may need both an Oregon and CA transit permit (one way trip to a CA permanent destination for vehicle or self.).

CA may require a DMV or CSP physical inspection of a car that is titled as a kit, assembly, or reconstruction. CA is very picky, so expect an uphill battle, as serious as not being allowed to register this vehicle in CA.

Then.... You must get creative!
