MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A newspaper advertisement for a Miami car dealership reads more like a coupon for bags of potato chips: "Buy one, get two!"
The ad speaks to the desperation of car dealers as Big Three auto manufacturers beg Washington for billions in bailout dollars to combat sales that keep dipping to all-time lows.
Well, where do you expect them to sell cars? Walmart,?
Somehow, I dont see that as such a stretch, when the Chinese start importing their Geely's and Chery's in a few years.
My local WalMart has regular car and boat sales shows in those big parking lots now........
I didn't even realize there WAS a Chrysler/Jeep dealership in San Francisco. The Saturn dealership in Daly City closed too. But then Beshoff, who already has a M-B dealership in east San Jose, is opening up an Infiniti store there...
All NEW car dealerships are franchise. Someone pays the factory $XXX dollars for the name marque and the right to sell their product. In return the dealer has to purchase xx number of cars each month. They also have exclusive control in availability of certain parts for a set period of time thereby guaranteeing profits to a "dealer Item only" when a need arises (collisions etc). Even then some hard parts are a "dealer item" for a longer period so the money factor is there. No other parts supplier has a source of supply for many items. Even later yrs some items are at a higher markup due to being called "Factory Original" or "Equipment Original". The factory controls the MKT on "EO" parts. Steve
