I think you have no idea what your talking about... NO v8 20 years ago ever got 45 mpg like the small 4 cylinders do today. Not even close.
20 years ago 15 mpg on the highway was the norm for a v8
My 1986 5.0 liter V8 powered Crown Vic got around 25 mpg on the highway. It was still getting that mileage at 12 years old and over 150,000 miles on it when I sold it.

My 68 Lincoln with a 462 4barrel carb got a whopping 9mpg.
It all depends on the way you drive, and the aerodynamics of the vehicle. I had an 89 Camaro with the 305 that averaged 37 MPG on the freeway. (22 MPG with the cruse set on 100 MPH). My Jeep that weighs 1800 pounds with me sitting in it, has a 360 V-8 and is lucky to get 18 MPG on the road, but it is about as aerodynamic as a billboard. The Jeep came from the factory with a 232 straight 6 cyl. With the straight 6 in it it got 14 MPG on the road at BEST, and 10 MPG at worst. The big ol' V-8 actually helped improve the MPG because it didn't work at all pushing the fiberglass bodied playtoy down the road, the 6 cyl had to really work to move the tires and push the wind to get the thing to roll.
Best I have had though was a little Metro that consistently got 50 MPG in town and 47 on the Freeway. That beasty came with a whopping 1 liter 3 cyl. Didn't have the power to pull the hat off your head, but it sure got good mileage.
total BS. Not even close.. you would be lucky to get 25 on the highway and that would be a stretch. Some of us know better. NO Camaro ever got 37 mpg on the highway.

You ever drive mine pinhead? Nope, didn't think so. No BS at all. 37 average IF you kept it at 70. Like I said only 22 if the cruise was set on 100.

Highway mileage is not the only measure of fuel economy. In fact, it is a poor measure of fuel economy comparisons since you're not really using all that power that can be bragged about. If anything, you're probably using as much, if not less rolling power during steady state cruising on highway.
I have gotten 37 mpg going 60-65 mph in my 2006 TL, but I won't make the claim that a compact car with smaller engine with about half the power has a less efficient motor. The key here is, that under those circumstances, neither car's engine is being used to their potential, probably identical power/weight ratio under the circumstances, hence similar mileage. It is in city and stop-go driving, and pushing the car, where the difference begins to show up.

^^ Even N/A Subarus usually have lower gas mileage than their segment competitors.
