First car I bought was a 3 year old red 1998 Trans Am. I loved Trans Am's as a kid and to own one was a dream come true. That was the first year they used the LS1 engine and adapted the final body style. That car was blazing fast and handled amazingly (on dry pavement). I had very good luck with it as I owned it until it had 100,000 miles and the only major repair was a differential rebuild (covered under extended warranty). Kinda sad to see Pontiac go... RIP.
And that's why my Dad was so insistant on buying cars with carbs for so long. We didn't buy a car with FI until the early '90's.
I can definitely understand why your dad didn't want FI. To this day, I would rather have an engine with a carbureator if I had a choice. I still have 5 old cars with carbureators and if they're not running right, I know how to fix them with just basic tools. With a new car, start looking for a tow truck.
I have good memories of Pontiac. Probably my best memory was a 1976 TA with a 455 engine - what a car. I wish I still had it. I remember installing headers with a true dual exhaust, high-rise manifold, holley carb and fixing up the curve on the distributor. What a tire burner! Fortunately, I have my 2002 black/black TA. I'll keep it forever. It's been long since paid off.
1956 Pontiac Fire Chief, 1963 Pontiac Lemans, 1969 Wagon, 1978 Grand Safari, These were my dads. Mine was a 1970 Pontiac Firebird, my friends, a 69 Firebird..vroooooom.
When I was three my mom put me in the back seat of a rented Grand Am. She then put something in the trunk. When she closed the trunk the rear window shattered and I got covered with broken glass.
The first "fast" car I drove was a Trans Am with an after market supercharger. My buddy let me drive it around town for about an hour. I thought it was fast then, but compared to a few other cars I've since driven it wasn't that great.
Those are my personal memories. I've heard countless stories from friend about their Pontiacs breaking down or some other misfortune.
First car was a 1981 Black Trans Am with an 8 track player and electric windows. Have many, many fond memories of cruising the neighborhood and taking it on weekend road trips. I remember when I first got it. I must've taken 100 Polaroid photos of the car, me sitting in the car, standing by the car, friends in the car, etc.
I've owned a '66 and '69 GTO. Still have the tri-power set up for the '66 collecting cobwebs in the garage.
