I just took a new job that is about 80 miles round trip per day. We have a 99 burb that gets about 16 to 18 miles per gallon and so are looking for a cheap fuel friendly car.
My husband's friend has an 88 Accura Legend with 166K miles for $1,000. It is missing 2nd gear on an automatic tranny. It will cost us about $1,000 for a new/rebuilt tranny as the labor is free (good old shadetree mechanic brother that knows his stuff.)
Would you do this or wait for a car with less mileage and a little more expensive.

It would be worth $1,000 if the tranny was good. In its current condition, I would say $200 at the most.
Your talkig abput worlk here;so I would malke sure I had reliable transporttion becuase it can cause big problems if it turns out to be a poor keepup car besides the transmission and cause you to constantly breakdow and endanger your work record.Thatis a olod car and if not manitained it could be the first sign itsa woreouyt. Good Luck
1984vt... I wouldn't personally buy a car that old, unless you know that maintenance has recently been done on it (e.g. belts have been replaced, hoses and cables have been replaced, spark plugs, tires, etc. have been replaced)... but that's because I really really really detest dealing with car problems. Most work I can't do myself as I don't have the know how... at least not yet. So personally, I would wait and buy a decent used Toyota, Hyundai, or Honda...

If you are looking for a car with high mph and reliability, don't overlook the KIAs. I bought a 2002 Sportage and it's possibly the most reliable car I've ever owned. I've been driving for 43 years, btw.

Ha Ha, real funny. The reviews speak for themselves...
1988 Acura Legend: 48 total reviews, 41 positive, 7 negative. Overall, 85% of the buyers of the 1988 Legend are happy with their purchase.
