There is a magnet behind the sensor that occasionally goes bad. Try to replace the magnet behind the sensor, it will cost you $10 for the part. Replacing the wires and the plugs is crucial on that engine at 30 000 miles. It will go bad. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can do the job yourself since it is easy to access the plugs and wires. Your timing belt needs to be replaced according to the book at 90k but i would recommend to do it around 60/70k and have the water pump replaced at the same time since it is behind the timing belt. That job requires a skilled technician and special tools to get it right.
What would the cost be to have them install the cam sensor/magnet? The reason I was considering getting my spark plugs changed is because I have a coupon from my auto repair shop for a $58 tune-up.
Well, the shop will probably charge you 1hr diag for check engine light. Then the parts and the labor based off the guide they are using (mitchell, alldata etc) It probably pay 0.5 up to 1.5 times the hourly rate the shop charges to install the sensor. If you have a coupon for a $58 tune up i would use it but ask first what brand plugs and wires they will use. Some vehicles (Jeep in line 6 for example) does not run well on anything but champion plugs. Call and ask first.
