Why does it seem like every thread on this forum somehow manages to turn into an American car company, UAW-bashing free-for-all? You people seriously need to take a chill pill and find some hobbies. Settle your disputes like adults, not like children going back and forth with 'yo mama' jokes. Good grief. I was so astonished with the lack of maturity in the discussion that I actually forgot what I originally came into this topic to say.
Well, except for the fact that 95% of UAW auto workers are automatons for the Democrat party, and will vote as told, I would love to see the Feds put things on a level playing field for once by telling the Labor officials to take a hike. As for feeling less upset if Fiat were building these in Canada, they're just as socialist up there as here, so nothing is gained.
Lots of Fords, BTW, are built in Mexico, so there are good cars being made there, and don't forget that Fiat has the say-so on where their cars are built.
Actuly it's about a 50 percent split on union members voting either democratic or republican that is not of the 20 percent independent. I know this because i did the survey and the counting. You have the ones that whatever the union says must be how it is, you the ones that because the union wants them to vote for someone, they won't because they don't trust the union they are forced to belong to. By no means is the voting by a majority of union members as the union leaders want to pretend.

At least Fiat seems to have a more interesting range than Chrysler. Who knows..
I do like the way the 500 looks, dunno if I'd get one.. maybe if they brought the Abarth version.. I need the speed..

True, however the UAW and other union leaders regularly donate the majority of their political cash to the Democratic party.
If the new Fiat is no better than the last, none of this will matter a bit to anyone. Those cars were total junk new on the showroom floor. I have no reason to believe these will be any better. They made english sports cars look great!
This is the plant that for the last decade has built PT Cruisers and Journeys. My PT was a great quality car, with no defects, squeaks, rattles or problems in the 5 years I owned it.

You know what? I'm pretty damn tiresd of a bunch of ignorant pissants that think that it's a valuable goal to be insulting and downright rude about cars that simply aren't their favorites. I've never seen why, other than the anonymity of the internet, it's become a valuable goal to be idiotic, closed minded, insulting and rude about a brand or model you don't own. If you don't want one, don't buy one, but stop being friggin' rude, even if there's no immediate threat of being punched in the crotch.
1) Fiat cars were crap 25+ years ago. Why? Things like improper frame/body weather treating that led to rust (not that big a deal in South Europe); small engines that were not designed to be driven at US freeway speeds for extended periods of time every day; they were just cheapo cars in general; and Fiat notoriously gave little support to US vendors and techs so their resources were slim. The whole US project was an abortion from the start. In the time since Fiat has left the US market, the company has grown massively and their R&D, vehicle construction, and overall vehicle technology has remained competitive against European carmakers like VW, Opel/Vauxhall, etc. I don't think that they will have anywhere near the same level of issues that they did.
2) A friend of mine I race with, who's way into SCCA and other amateur racing associations rented an Abarth 500 when he was in Spain a few months ago and said it was one of the most fun cars he's ever driven. Can't wait to try one myself! I'm always happy when we get another European hot hatch on US roads.
3) Not all union workers are fervent liberals - quite the contrary... I was in the Teamsters for a few years, not because I wanted to be a Teamster or anything, but because I had no choice but to join if I wanted to be in that line of work. I paid $500 union entrance fees and lost $50 per paycheck for services that not only did I never use, but that gave preferrential treatment based on seniority rather than merit or skill, so lazy jerks who did the minimum amount of work but hit the bare minimum required by the contract would walk home with a fat paycheck while I was hoping someone would kick a shift down to me so I could maybe make my rent on time. Based on my experience, I would never consider working for a union again. They may have served a purpose back in the days when people were forced to work 20-hour shifts with no safety measures and risk getting sucked into processing or stamping machines, but now we have a department of labor and a whole ton of laws, and the unions I've worked for (three of them) really just served the role of staffing brokers who collected money both from the business and the workers so that the labor bosses' kids could go to the same prep schools as the CEO's of the businesses they leeched off of.
And keep in mind when I say this, I am an unabashed, self-professed liberal.
