Sometimes a bad wheel bearing will make a noise that many people mistake for a tire noise.
If you can do this safely - next time it starts howling, weave back and forth a bit. If it really is the passenger's side wheel bearing (most common one to fail, hitting curbs and etc.) as you swerve to the *left*, the noise should get louder, as you swerve to the *right*, it should be quieter.
Do you have aftermarket locking hubs on this truck?
If you are strapped for cash, DIY should save you some $.
This trick does not work for all wheel bearing designs.
It has happened thirty seconds after starting out of my driveway on a cold winter morning, and three hours down the road on a warm day. In other words, random times at random speeds, random temperature, and random weather conditions.
If you can safely put the whole truck on jackstands....do it.
Then put the truck in gear and see what you can hear and learn.
Could be a bad wheel bearing or even just a bad tire design.
My brand new nissan makes a howling noise when turning at speed due to the way the tread blocks are set up and how they flex when turning. My dad's car had a bad wheel bearing and like yours too, the howling will come and go depending on which side the load was on.
I have a 94 s10 5 speed 4.3 v6. when i stomp on the gas and get up to highway speed and start slowing down i hear a howling noise in the front passenger side and as i slow down the louder it gets until about 25 mph then it clunks and stops. it does not have a pattern sometimes it does it a few times and sometimes it does not at all. when it is making the howling noise and i click it into 4 hi it goes away.then i click it back into 2 right away.what could this be? my four wheel drive had not worked and it did not do this when it didnt work but now that it does this started happening.
My dodge 1500 2008 Laramie is howling between 37 and 45 MPH no wheel play, nose goes away when foot off the gas or when breaking. Doesn't do it all the time but getting louder, no change in the RPM's, preceded by a grinding/ vibrating sound--plse don't tell me it is the transmission.
