Orders for the A350 seem to be significant for the USA airlines. Delta has not officially cancelled it's Dreamliner order, but there is not much discussion lates.

Could this be the new dominant widebody?

Don't haul lithium batteries in cargo holds . Be very careful with oxygen generators because few have any clue how to deal with their variables and have little knowledge how to maintain them. Oxgen has never been adequately understood in aviation or medical facilities.

Both planes have their own benefits and disadvantages. The A350 is more of a direct replacement for the 777-200/300 whereas the 777X is more of a 777-300/747-400 replacement.

What it boils down to is: The A350 can do 90% of what the current model 777's can with a significant fuel savings. The 777X can do that, plus much more.

On long, cargo-heavy routes, the 777's will win. On long routes with less cargo, or short routes with cargo, the A350 is just plainly more efficient due to its lower design weight. Both have their roles. But for the majority, the A350 will fit their needs.

The screeching halt for the debut A350 flight from JFK was a real kick in the pants. The plane went from 100 mph to zero in 15 seconds because it's sensors believed they were running out of runway. I think there were 7 journalists onboard. After 2 hours and a lot of booze, they tried again and left on their way to Qatar.
