Having flown both this past month I can say that Emirates is much better. Larger portions of food, better entertainment system, and generally nicer planes. Etihad flies twin engine planes at least in my experience between Europe and middle east. But Emirates uses wide body jets even on short flights such as one we took between Muscat and Dubai.
Also the Dubai airport definitely is the nicer of the two
Abu Dhabi seems very crowded with narrower passage ways.
Thoughts? Both airlines have been on schedule for me.

I don't think you can compare plane size. Emirates will probably soon to be the largest airline in the world by passenger km flown.
By scheduled passenger-kilometres flown (millions) for 2014
Delta Air Lines 290,862
United Airlines 287,547
Emirates 230,855
China Southern Airlines 166,074
Southwest Airlines 162,445
Lufthansa 143,403
British Airways 137,204
Air France 134,528
Air China 112,247
Depends on the class of travel. I hate coach on Emirates, because the 10-abreast seating in 777 airplanes is just insane. Etihad uses many Airbus 330 planes to Europe which are much more comfortable with only 2 seats outside, especially for couples.
I liked Emirates Business class on the A380, with the bar in the back and quite comfortable seats. The business class in the older Boeing 777 was rather underwhelming though.

I agree on the thoughts about AUH airport.
I prefer Qatar business class on the 777....Not a fan of the 380...too much people on a damn plane
Out of the two i prefer Etihad
