How much does a parachute cost? I googled and saw it costs $8000?? Where does one buy them and for cheaper? Would a person without any training be able to deploy parachute in emergency?

Its not something you want to go cheap on. I was into skydiving years ago. Now it is faster to get started. Back then you had to take a class, several days a week, over a 2 week period, tests, then training at the airport, on a mock up plane. The chutes we used were the modified to steer, military green ones. The first few jumps are static line, like in the war movies you see, it opens by itself. Then a few static line and a fake rip cord to pull. Some people freeze, and pull nothing. Opening is the easy part. Most of the classwork was what to do if there is a problem. If it doesnt open, or opens and is tangled, how much time to try and fix it, or cut away to reserve chute, also how to turn, slow down ( go against the wind) or speed up ( go with the wind), and landing safely, avoiding obstacles, power lines and such. You cant legally just buy a chute go up and jump out. You could buy one. Who will pack it, or check it. No pilot would take a person up to jump in this situation. Its very interesting once you get started, or just to read up on.

Are you talking emergency chute, recreational chute, or ballistic chute?

$8K sounds like an airframe mounted ballistic chute.

That's sort of like asking how much a car costs.

What would you be using this parachute for?

These: Para-Cushion - Para Gear

Don't buy a parachute online. Go to a gear shop and get properly measured and fitted. They may recommend styles or brands which are user friendly. You want it to be duh, brainfreeze easy to use.

Don't even consider doing this unless you've receiver proper training.* You can't just fling yourself out of an aircraft, tug on your ripcord handle, and expect everything to turn out well.

I suggest you try a tandem jump. You'll learn whether or not you really want a parachute.

*I wonder if some sort of proof of training, certification, is required to buy one of those.
