Engine exploded, shrapnel broke window, passenger nearly sucked out window in flight.

She's lucky and so is the whole plane load. Those blades can destroy the whole aircraft just like shrapnel from a missile. Hope the girl is okay.

Reported that this is the first death of a passenger on a U.S. airline since 2009? Still sounds like a total nightmare, but I do find it quite amazing that the investigators will be able to pinpoint to the minute detail what occurred. I know cowlings have failed but this seems like something internal gave out. I wont speculate, but would love anyone here with experience to possibly summize.

Looks like a fan blade broke off according to the NTSB.
