Default You are in the minority

I bet that if a poll was conducted on this site about Haussner's, most would have no idea.

If I could go back in time to visit any restaurant I have ever been to, anywhere, my choice would be Haussner's. Haussner's was magnificent. Great food and great ambience with typically Baltimore waitresses -- "Whaddaya want, hon?"

On occasion, so they say, you could see the Mayor and/or the Governor standing in line in the rain to get in (no reservations).

A great loss to Baltimore when it closed.

Another institution in its day was Miller Brothers.

Why would you assume that?

Default Our fast-moving world

Haussner's appealed to a certain age group and demographics (as in parties coming in with their priest). It's like asking about Mel Torme in the age of Beyonce.

I've read about it. Saw their artwork retrieved close to $10 million at auction. There have been several attempts to bring something back there, but it is yet to happen. I wish Baltimore had more German cuisine.

You are probably right. Haussner's closed, what, nearly 15 years ago?

Haussner's was a great institution but it did belong to a different age. We went to Haussner's a number of times in the 70s and 80s but by the 90s it had more or less faded from our daily routines. Newer restaurants in Baltimore were more appealing and Haussner's was not only stodgy by modern standards but the food was hit or miss. Some of what they served was very good, other dishes not so much.

I am sorry Haussner's closed. It had a wonderful, ye olde world ambiance that has largely died out. But even if they hadn't shuttered I'm not sure how the restaurant would have fared compared to the new generation of Baltimore restaurants such as the Wolfe/Foreman group or the Black Olive or Woodberry Kitchen.

Wonderfully said. People's dining habits have changed. I enjoyed Haussner's but even in it's prime, I often chose to dine elsewhere. I still remember the spread in National Geographic solely dedicated to Haussner's. It was truly an institution!

There was an article in the Guide this week that some restaurant people have been kicking the tires on the old Haussner's building, but the lack of parking in the area is a problem: Alewife restauranteur to open new eatery in Highlandtown; parking solution an incentive | The Baltimore Guide
