Feature: A Breakdown Of Baltimore City’s 2007 Homicide Statistics | 1/23/2008 | Citypaper.com

--Interesting details about our alarming homicide rate for last year. I am keeping my fingers crossed for 2008. So far, below par and hoping that continues.

Very interesting jonjj. Thanks for posting. What I find most informative is the widespread nature of the violence. From Park Heights to Belair-Edison, O'Donnell Heights to Cherry Hill, homicides are occuring throughout the city. Unlike some cities where you can effectively avoid the worst neighborhoods, it's hard to do that in Baltimore. Every police district in the city (except Central with 14) had over 20 homicides. Another person posted his/her impression of Baltimore on a different thread saying, "Go five minutes in any direction, and you're in a bad neighborhood." I think that sums it up.

Wow this makes me sad. 282 murders and 9 convictions? Oy. I guess it really is easy to get away with murder in Baltimore.

It takes quite awhile for the courts and cases to go to trial and a verdict to be decided upon. That is why there were only 9 convictions. Most of the cases for 2007 haven't even gone to court yet. That is typical throughout the country, not just in Baltimore.

I also found it interesting that O'Donell Heights which is a public housing project on the city-county line in the zip 21224 had 6 homicides in 2007 and none in 2006. What happened over there? It seems to me the last time I drove over there, many of the homes were vacant and a lot of the area had been torn down.
