My family is seriously considering a relocation to the Baltimore area from St. Petersburg, FL due to a potential job in downtown Baltimore. We are desperate to avoid suburban sprawl, but have elementary age children, so good schools and safety are top concerns. We particularly love historic areas near a city center. I am having some difficulty trying to get a clear picture on what communities/neighborhoods to focus. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is your price range and how much commute time are you willing to tolerate? What will your work schedule be like? In this area, traffic is pretty important thing to plan for as it can vary greatly depending on the the time of day.

Depending on your budget, you may want to look into Catonsville, MD. It's minutes to downtown, located right over the city line in Baltimore County. Schools are good, has a walkable downtown area and a Historic feel.

Right next to Catonsville is Historic Ellicott City which is in Howard County, and a good schools system.

The top rated schools are private schools, or in the suburbs.

Thank you! We would like to keep it under $350,000 if that is realistic. Currently, have about an hour commute between downtown St. Petersburg and Tampa and would really like to shorten the commute.

I believe the work schedule will be fairly standard, but I'm not entirely sure of the details as yet. We are visiting in about a week and a half and will have more information.

Are there historic neighborhoods near the city center of historic Ellicott City?

Oella would be the only Historic neighborhoods near Ellicott City and Catonsville. They are right next to each other. $350 however isn't going to buy you much in Howard County - a townhouse. It may buy you more in Catonsville, but not by much. I don't think its going to be challenging to find a historic neighborhood near Baltimore , that's safe and with good schools not in a suburb for $350. Its sad!

Hopefully someone else has better suggestions!

You may want to also look into Mt. Washington and Lauraville. Both neighborhoods are in Baltimore City, but it may work well for you.

I will second catonsville as well as it fits your needs and will meet your price point.

Just looking online, I noticed Lutherville. However, it looks like a traditional suburb?

I honestly prefer the area Lutherville but the prices may be a bit higher and it doesn't really have a city center like catonsville/historic ellicott city.
