IMO, Strasburg should sign with Nationals if they stay in $ ballpark of rest but even a tad shy, as a reward for signing him far before FA before.
Other young stars should do the same, even 2nd tier players.
Even though I am high on Conforto & a Met fan, if I were him, I would set a deadline of end of 2020 to be signed for at least 5 years by the Mets, or formally announce that upon FA, they are not contenders. Mets play the wait til end game far too often, and their players should not tolerate it.
I'd like to see young Brave stars do the same. Set deadlines for long-term deals.
Under-paying several years, followed by over-paying post FA could be largely solved if players played their cards.
Announcing a drop dead date lowers their trade value to the team they are on.
It's business, not personal. Why limit your options?
It would not IMO limit it. It would prompt teams to offer long-term deals before the 11th hour.
