I doubt many of us on here are followers on the womens side of college ball, but I'll share anyway that longtime NCSU coach Kay Yow lost her long battle with cancer early this morning in Cary, NC. While the team hasn't been as good as it used to be, her legacy will doubt live on. A sad day for college basketball

True sports fans know exactly who Kay Yow is and about her dedication to the game and to N.C. State. I had a lot of respect for her...I would say she was just below Pat Summit as far as reputation and fame in the overall sports world.
believe me when I say there were times I wished she could coach the mens team, shame too that we had to lose Jimmy V to the same fate as well. The Men's program has not been the same since he left, im hoping the same won't happen for the womens team.
Well, 20 years after her initial diagnosis wasn't too bad...a lot of ladies don't get that much time. (As I know all too well) Glad she got to live a reasonably full and most importantly productive life. RIP.
Mathguy is right, it was 20 years, but when she was diagnosed they never lost focus. If memory serves,it was just the next year that she took the ladies basketball team to win the gold medal in the 1988 Olympics. Without a doubt one of the great coaches ever.
I was lucky enough to be at State when both Jim Valvano and Kay Yow were coaches. They both shared a similar enthusiasm for basketball and life. Kay's battle on the court at NCSU lasted over 3 decades and remember, she took the USA women to Seoul, where they won the gold. If only her other fight against breast cancer would have turned out so well. She will be missed!
