I just bought my first BMW, a 2006 325i with only 35K miles on it. I have the manual but I don't see a maintenance schedule. Any suggestions on a maintenance schedule? I'd like to take good care of it and avoid dropping thousands of dollars on big repairs due to neglegence. Also, this is my first auto transmission (not sure how I feel about that, I worry that this is the one aspect of the car I'll regret compromising on.) so i'm not sure what the maintenance schedule on it is. Advice? BMW boards that may be worth checking out?

Last question first:

bimmerforums, especially the 3 series section is a great resource.

1999 - 2005 (E46) - Bimmerforums - The Ultimate BMW Forum

bimmerfest also has a lot of good info:

E46 (1999 - 2006) - bimmerfest - BMW Forums

And of course, first thing you really shoudl do is join BMW CCA:

BMW CCA

Membership has save me a ton of money over the years.

As for maintenance, the trans is supposedly lifetime fill. But I'd say at about 100k do a BG flush on it (That's a trade name). Oil changes are supposedly every 10-15k (you have an oil change monitor on the dash that tells you when the next change is due). I don't like to go over 7500 miles on the oil, even with the recommended synthetic.

Other than that, just watch condition of things and pay attention to any new noises. They have issues with HVAC fans, VANOS, and intake boots. And E46s are notorous for failing window regulators (FCP Groton now sells ones with lifetime warranties). But on the positive not, I've been recently driving my stepson's '02 325i and it has 245k miles on it...

A 2006 325i can be an E46 chassis if it's a coupe or the new E90 chassis if it's a sedan. That's the first thing you need to know when joining a forum like bimmerforums or bimmerfest. There's also a couple model-specific forums like e46fanatics and e90post.

The newer models don't have a fixed or pre-defined maintenance schedule, and routine maintenance such as oil changes are scheduled based on the on-board computer and CBS (Condition-Based Service). Some people don't like this system and follow their own fixed intervals (e.g. oil changes every X miles) or follow the schedule created by M. Miller, technical writer at BMWCCA's Roundel magazine.
