We currently live in Yakima, WA and have had it with the crime/gangs/etc. and have happened upon Boise as a place to raise our 2 small kids. I'm an RN (and do triathlon in my spare time) and my husband is an electrician (loves all thing guns/fishing/hunting). Is Boise really as nice as everyone says? It sounds like you have a little piece of heaven there.
Any ideas on jobs (more for my hubby than me). Thanks!

I think the job market in Boise is pretty good right now. An electritian would probably do well here now with all the big construction projects going on, and healthcare is always in demand. I believe St Lukes is the largest private employer in the Treasure Valley.
Yakima isn't far - make a long weekend of it and check the area out. Weather is probably pretty similar, and Ada County (Boise, Meridian, Eagle) has no major issues with crime or gangs. You do get into some of that in Canyon County so you might steer clear of that area.
Thanks for your responses! i've been reading through all of the threads this weekend - sounds like a true gem. We're definitely going to check Boise out soon!
I have cousins in Yakima. Why they stay is beyond me. The long drive down Nob Hill boulevard to visit one of them was just depressing.
Boise is a pretty nice place. No part of it compares to Yakima, or even Pasco. It's like if you combined Spokane and Tri-cities (where I lived for 16 years), added a larger university, took much of the corrupt old boy/girl network (that stifles creativity) out in the woods and made it disappear, and poured in a bunch of civic spirit. Only downside: with less Hispanics comes less Mexican food. The very best Mexican food in the Boise area, by acclaim, would be somewhat above average in *** or the TC.
Edit: Odd. Wonder why it interpreted the first three letters of the word 'Yakima' as a dirty word.
Ha ha - kind of Freudian, wasn't it? I work as a children's nurse and in just the last month we've had 3 tween-age kids shot d/t gang activity. Last night's shooting was by the gym I work out at and it was kind of the last straw. We had also looked at Richland but with Hanford in it's last stage of clean-up I'm worried about the long-term economic base.
Don't worry about Richland running out of work. The locals have zero plans to actually clean anything up and work themselves out of jobs. The only way the contamination will actually be remedied is if someone comes out and says, 'in such and such a time this will either be cleaned up, or everyone who failed will be physically dipped in a tank of the remaining nuclear waste.' Short of that, they'll keep on not cleaning up the mess their grandparents left, to make sure their kids and grandkids can get good jobs continuing not to clean it up.
...took much of the corrupt old boy/girl network (that stifles creativity) out in the woods and made it disappear....
You don't think that happens here? Yeesh, are you paying attention? Local or state, its all corrupt, good-ol'-boy politics. For starters, simply Google: Bieter, Ada County Highway District, Dynamis, Ada County Commissioners, Sharon Ullman, Tom Luna, Idaho school wireless contract, Lawrence Denney.... it goes on and on and on and on...

I don't say that it does or doesn't. I do not know yet. I haven't had time enough here to pay enough attention to form an opinion.
St. Luke's has Idaho's only Children's Hospital--St. Luke's Children's Hospital is a hospital within a hospital. They have level 3 NICU, peds unit, peds oncology, lots of specialist, pediatric ER, etc. so with your background I would think finding work would not be hard.
Electricians are in demand right now. We have lots of construction going on in the area.
Fall is a beautiful time to visit--sounds like a road trip is in order to come see what you are missing.
