Hmm. I wonder what the growth is like compared to here. Still probably slower the. Here. I was looking at houses and they are extremely affordable around boise compared to here. As an example I've sort of noticed that a 300k house hear can go for half in and around boise. That's just from my observations. If we sell our house we will make a good amount of profit but still...not going to move unless I have a job lined up.
Interesting post. Let me add my few cents! Just a quick background. My husband works for the FAA. So job opportunities for him are everywhere. We were born and raised in AK. Lived in Boise for a year. Moved back to AK for 2. Henderson, Nv for 2 years. SoCal for 1. (We even bought a house...thinking it was gonna be a forever home!). And now we're in Fed. Way, WA. We have 3 kids. All of whom are teenagers now. My oldest is a senior so we'll stay put for another year...even though it drives me crazy! I'm done with the gobs of traffic and people. And the not so good schools. And all the dark, dreary, rainy days in the winter. We aren't buying around here. THIS we know for a fact!
Who knows where we'll end up next. My hubby likes the Boise and Medford area. I'm ready (almost) to make a HUGE move across the country....either the mid west or the east coast! We'll see.
Everyday is an adventure. Before our moves, we would visit the place. Visit the schools. Attend some local events. See the people. Not a whole lot of research. But that's the fun in it all! Our motto? Tomorrow isn't promised. As a matter of fact, we just lost a few friends in an airplane crash in AK a few days ago. Life is an adventure! Go make some memories!
It's not just the drivers. I've lived here my whole life and most of the people here are rude. When we were in Boise we noticed that most of the people were very nice and welcoming.
Is there any sign that wages are going to increase in Boise? The data that is available makes it look like it hasn't trended up to keep up with the cost of living?
I don't think it matters for my SO, but when the kids start working I would hope they don't have to leave the state for better professional opportunities because they aren't making what they would be elsewhere and can't afford to live here. That's already what we're seeing in California, although they are getting paid more, it's just the cost of living is so outrageous young people never get a chance to get ahead. They seem doomed from the very start!!!
I wouldn't know. I am making just above minimum wage right now here in washington state and my wife and I aren't in the hole...It's hard but doable.
From what I have been looking at the cost of living to the wage is evened out. I could be wrong though. I would gladly give up 9.47 (minimum wage for washington state) for a little over 8.00 if the cost of living evened out.
That's if I had to work a minimum wage job. I'm still looking for a job down there though cause I miss the state, people and room.
Nobody is paid minimum wage in Boise. The labor market here is pretty competitive and wages have actually gone up quite a bit this year at the lower end of the labor pool. You aren't going to make big bucks unless you're an in demand professional or have a successful business, but you could make $9.47 in a lower end retail job.
I'd argue you're probably going to make closer to $11 or $12 an hour for most entry level positions anyway. We pay our receptionist (entry level, no experience) $13 to start, but I think we're a bit higher than most.
Really. That's not bad considering. What do teachers generally make?
