We enjoy "Justified" on TV. Because of that we've bought several Elmore Leonard books at local library sales. My husband just finished City Primevil and didn't like it very much. I've started it and wonder if I should even bother to finish it. If it is representative of all his work, we might donate the books back to be sold again.
The other ones we have are Tishomingo Blues, Be Cool, Get Shorty, Hot Kid, Cuba Libre, Djibouti, Cat Chaser and Freaky Deaky. Are any of those better than the one we've read? (I know "better" is extremely subjective.) Thanks.
I love Elmore Leonard, but I'll be the first to admit his work is very hit and miss. I too love Justified, but I honestly didn't much care for Leonard's book Raylan.
Leonard's prose is famously sparse. But sometimes it is TOO sparse. He cuts out so much that sometimes it isn't clear exactly what is happening. But his dialogue is second to none.
Great Elmore Leonard books:
Bandits
Road Dogs
Out of Sight
Mr. Paradise
Any of his Westerns
I love his work, he is the king of dialogue. Some of my favorite books of his are:
Killshot
52 Pick-up
Rum Punch
I really loved Rum Punch (adapted as the movie Jackie Brown) - the only other one I have read is Get Shorty which I enjoyed too - he is indeed a master of dialogue!
