OK folks - I'm getting on a sci-fi streak for my reading right now, so figured I'd ask for your opinions. I tend to gravitate towards alien planets (like the descriptions of the flora and fauna), sleep ships (something about waking to a new environment intrigues me), I like hard science but not required, but not big on war.

What ya got for me?

Asimov and the Foundation series?

It's the alien planets angle, sorta political (fall of an empire).

If you're into world-building and don't mind Fantasy, look into Patrick Rothfuss and The Name of the Wind (it's not too outlandish and the world-building it truly fantastic IMHO).

One of my favorites is "Forbidden Planet" by W.J. Stuart.

Also, this series:

I really enjoyed the series.

Anne McCaffrey's Pern or Acorna series.
Piers Anthony's Adept series (kind of a mix of science and magic, fairly light reading).
Frank Herbert's Dune series - although it kind of tanked when his son took over the writing. Still good for the first few books, though, and the later books really aren't germane to the story anyway.

Come to think of it, just about anything by Anne McCaffrey would fit the bill. Might want to check out her Generation Warriors series prior to the others, as it really does fit the criteria that you are looking for.

That's all I have right now, but I tend to either go with fantasy or military sci-fi and if you don't want war and do want science then neither of those genres work well for you.

Could possibly toss in Joel Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series, but again, it's more magic than science - although technology plays a big part in the stories.

+1

Asimov's Foundation and Empire books are exceptionally well done; very descriptive and vivid. No real wars as such; lots of politics and philosophy when describing "psycho history"

Definitely worth a read.

Two more recent recommendations featuring cool alien planets:

A Darkling Sea by James L. Cambias

A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge

And an oldie but goodie: Mission of Gavity by Hal Clement

Not sure if this would qualify, but I've heard great things about "The Martian" by Andy Weir. He also has a new one out called "Artemis".

I second both of these.

Not exactly a planet, but weird aliens: Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke.

And you might like the Steerswoman series by Rosemary Kirstein. Very neat world (and I can't say anything more than that without spoiling the series)!
