I did not even know she was ill. I read and very much appreciated her first book, Are You Somebody?
"There is nothing much wrong with me, except I am dying."
How sad, but brave.

This illness and O'Faolain's death were quite sudden if she had been diagnosed in February and died within 3 months!

I have not read her books, but have read excerpts. She had an incredible mind, but seemed tortured on so many levels. I think that is most cruel that her illness interferred with her intellect at the end. Had that been intact she may have had a more peaceful end with her books to comfort and support her.

I find it ironic that she made it quite clear that she did not believe in an afterlife, but was given a Catholic funeral Mass. And, another life is gone. Very sad.
