You may have discovered CMart just a few blocks south on Washington. It is an Asian market so you probably won't find normal stables like cheese and bread. Great place for fruits and vegs.
Shaw's Back Bay, down Boylston Street, is the only large supermarket in that area. Its up to 7 or 8 blocks away. There is a Whole Foods in Beacon Hill, through the Common on the back side of Beacon Hill on Cambrige Street. Or you can go to a bunch of the smaller markets that dot Boston, such as Lamberts (Midtown), Savenors (Beacon Hill) and DeLucas (Back Bay). Lamberts is close to you, but it is small, but quality. Good for essentials.

anyone know of a good grocery store - up to 7 or 8 blocks away...

Unfortunately, there aren't any really good markets close to you.
If you walk down Washington Street toward the South End, you can go to Foodies (it's across from the RC Cathedral) - that's available by using the Silver Line. Foodies is kind of like a low-rent Whole Foods. Or, as an earlier poster said, you can walk to Shaw's on Huntington at the juncture of the South End and Back Bay. Otherwise, the choices are distinctly limited. There are a number of nice specialty markets on and around Hanover Street in the North End. But, that's going to be a really good hike.
Your question raises a very interesting point; that is, how realistic is it for the Menino administration to be promoting downtown living aggressively when basic services, like grocery shopping, are pretty much non-existent?
Ming's is still Ming's although under new management. There are 2 C-Marts on Washington st. One in the South End that use to be old 88. The other one is in Chinatown across Penang Restaurant

You are correct there's a C-Mart at the old 88 on Washington. However, there's no C-Mart across Penang in Chinatown. The C-mart in Chinatown is next to Chau Chow on Essex St and another one is across the South Station.

there is a c-mart across from penang restaurant. The market next to chau chow city has been abandoned for a few years now. But you're right about the other c-mart on lincoln st near south station.
