I live in Massachusetts. I helped my adult daughter buy a car and the vehicle is registered in both of our names. The vehicle has also been paid for so the title also is in both our names. We would like to remove my name from the registration so that it is registered only to her. She currently has her own insurance on that car and lives in a different home. Does anyone know what steps I need to take to remove my name from the registration and the title? Do I have to GIFT the car to her to create a whole new registration and title (which in Mass I believe must be done in person), or do I renew the registration (due by the end of this month) and then apply to amend the title and registration to include only her as the owner (which hopefully would not need to be in person)?

Any thoughts on the correct process?

Kevin in Mass

I think this is treated as a transfer of ownership, not an amended title. Here's the source.

Quote:
Note: If ownership is changing or if an owner is added or deleted from a title, this is not considered a correction. It is a transfer of ownership and a new original title must be applied for.
So it seems like you'd need to "gift" (or sell for $1) the car to her and apply for a new title and registration. I think you can do this by mail (send the completed application for title/registration, the previous title with new owner info, and $75 title/reg. payment, and sales tax) rather than in-person, but it might be easier just to do it in person if there's a time crunch.

What is the advantage of doing this? I would be too lazy and just wait until she sells the car in a few years. Most people don't keep cars long these days.

I would guess liability reasons - the OP's name is also on the insurance opening them up to responsibility in case of a incident.

Just because he's her father doesn't mean he wants his name listed as a defendant on a potential lawsuit. She's an adult now. Time to take responsibility for her own life.
