I'm looking to move to a place to start a career in firefighting, or at least to begin some kind of work where I can get to a job without a vehicle.

Is public transportation in Boston like that of New York City?

Public transportation is not as extensive as in NYC but it's doable to live here without a car. It's an expensive city though.

I have no idea what the criteria to apply to the FD is though--do you?

You're not getting on Boston fire unless you're a minority and a veteran.

Why would you not need a vehicle if you were a firefighter?

I've never met a fireman who did not own a car or a truck. Or both and a motorcycle, maybe a snowmobile too.

Good Luck Tin Bo,

You can get around Boston without a vehicle pretty well. If you get on Boston Fire, you will be amongst the best

Bob

Pretty much.

Take the test, get on a list....and wait.

But if you aren't a minority, or a veteran, you fall to the end of the list. I know a few people who made it to the BFD after a few years of waiting. They were Vets

People say the same thing about state troopers. However every single trooper I met is lily white (and mostly Irish).

Yay, better stay in college, which I decided to do anyways, and might as well scrap the idea of being a firefighter there. I'd be better off to just buy a junk car and run it into the ground and try to get onto a fire team in my own state.

I mean, I have the minority thing down. I'm African-American, if that still counts. I have Cherokee heritage, and although I don't know much about it, I always did want to be closer to that heritage and culture. I just don't know where any Cherokee tribe is or if it's like a club and you just sign up with the right qualifications, or if it's something you have to earn and prove.

Our senator is also a Cherokee. I'm sure she she could put you in touch with the local tribe. They would love to have you!

Really? Is there anything I would have to do? I don't really know what to expect or say, but if you would do that for me, I thank you.
