Hello, my wife and I have been talking about relocating to the Melbourne/Palm Bay area next summer. Currently we live in Ohio. She will be finished with her LPN clinicals this summer and I am finishing up an Associates degree in Financial Management. We have a 3 yr old and one on the way. I was just wondering what the area was like for raising a family and what job opportunities there are in the area. It's a big move so we are trying to do all of our homework. We're just cusrious what others have to say about the area. Thank you in advance to anyone who responds!! Have a great day!!

Hi, I moved my family down here to Palm Bay 1 year ago. Coming from up north it is definitely a major change for just about everything. I would say the area is okay to raise a family. I live in the NE side near Lockmar elementary which is one of the best parts of PB IMHO. It is a much slower pace of life but to the point of bordem. I havent found much to do out here beside the beach and the zoo. Being 1 hr & a half from Orlando seems ok but that commute to actually do things is terrible. As for safety down here im on the fence. Since moving here I have become a licensed gun owner with all thats been going on here lately ie: police officer savagely murdered to robberies and home invasions every few weeks or so. It just makes me sleep better at night. As for the job market? What job market? Yes it is that bad. It almost feels like the start of the recession all over again. I dont mean to scare you away I just would say think real hard about Palm Bay/Melbourne area. There are other nicer places in Brevard such as Viera and the beach communities but they of course bring a much higher price tag. Well I hope that helps a bit. Best of luck!

What are you interested in doing that you can't find here? Some of us who have lived here longer may be able to provide some suggestions other than the zoo and the beach.

I am also trying to figure out why people who just move here are not willing to drive an hour to hour and half for some of the things to do. Even if you live in the suburbs of big cities up North you drive an hour or more to get to some of the places you go.

Just this last month we went to 2 free concerts because we have passes to theme parks, saw Jack Hanna, went to a baseball game, went to a Magic game, went to Bayhill Invitational Golf tournement, went shopping at an outlet mall, went out to eat at several places, went to several beaches, hit the antigue and resell stores in Grant and Palm Bay along US1, .......and thats all I can remember. I am sure we did more.... Sometimes we volunteer for a day to get free admission on another day.

And the funniest destination we hit was the NEW Publix in Viera to eat Japanese. LOL And it was very good. Nice little seating area or you can do take out. Costs only about $7 for a pound of the food.
