Agreed. We have plenty of friends raising kids here and don't want to leave. With the beach and everything else close by, it's easy to keep them from getting bored.

Merritt Island between 520 and 528, east of Courtenay (I prefer), offers many neighborhoods that have plenty of shopping and food with moderate housing costs. For less corporate stuff, try beach side in Downtown Cocoa Beach, south of where A1A splits. Nice choices, less corporate, but housing will likely be higher priced.
