How are the summers in those areas compared to NYC?

Nicer, less smell and don't really need AC.

Grew up down there -- its just as humid here. Cooler (we have never broken 100). You don't get the hot air out to ocean night/ hot air into land day like LI. However, the farther from the lake, the warmer it gets.
A/C? This summer it hasn't been a real need, but that is a personal thing.

Buffalo has the best summer in the country East of the Rockies.

June, July, and August... 90+ degree days are rare. 75-85 is the norm from late may to mid September.

The humidity is moderate on the worst day. It is no where near as humid as the East Coast.

Summers in WNY are about 10 degrees cooler on average compared to the NYC area. Lots of upper 70's and low 80's for highs rather than upper 80's to low 90's during the summer. If you like a more comfortable summer you will love it! You get some sticky days, but overall it will feel like it does in late May/Early June in NYC all summer.

You get more shots of cooler Canadian air more frequently in WNY brining relief from the heat. You don't get those extreme heat waves (Upper 90's and higher) you get in NYC.

Winters are definitely much harsher in WNY. Much much more snow and shots of fridgid air with highs below freezing are possible from late Nov-Early March. In NYC you typically only get those kind of days in late January and Early February. Snow sticks around for weeks on end rather than melting after a few days like in NYC.

Summers are better in the Buffalo area but Winters are better in NYC. Both have very nice Autumns but spring is much nicer and longer in NYC.

It was cool in June / July but August was warm. Late August and next week have been unseasonably hot. We are 5-10 degrees above normal.

Last summer was the same way. Cool June / July, warm August and September. It isn't surprising due to how frozen the lake was deep into April. Most of the midwest had a cool summer this year. This is theorized to be because of the extreme heat out west and abnormally warm pacific ocean (summer polar vortex).

The closer to the lake you are, summers will be cooler, winters will be warmer. Lake Erie moderates temperatures.

Yes, but that doesn't explain the occasional cool July / Hot August-September we get the last two summers. July is still the hottest month on average by far.

Not only cooler, but more sun. Buffalo typically leads the north east with days of full sun each year. Again, like the cooler temps and lower humidity level is a product of it's position on the end of Lake Erie.
