Rentfaster is a pretty good site.

I've found kijiji to be really useful, and I know some friends who have posted on kijiji as landlords. There have been a number of scams on kijiji though, so use common sense and never send money blindly... Protect your id (ssi number shouldn't be necessary) etc.

One thing I've noticed is a number of places that rent require proof of employment and even a certain monthly income. I'm looking to move to Calgary from Winnipeg and my wife and I are more or less starting over. We don't have anything lined up yet, and may not but we are determined to move this year. It's getting frustrating! Anyone have any advice (other than get a job lined up first)?

The Calgary housing market rental unit availability is very low right now ... something like 1%. It's a landlord's market, so every available place has multiple applicants. Have you considered looking at shared accommodation until you're able to secure a job and credentials for renting your own place? I know of a few singles that rent large homes, with five bedroom, four bedroom, so on, and then they rent out individual rooms to individual people. The rent is much cheaper, there aren't as many rules surrounding the arrangement, and it allows you to move to Calgary and look around for work and accommodation.

Kijiji is where these places are typically advertised. Another option is the Calgary Herald rental pages. Older people still tend to advertise in the newspaper.

Another good idea is to wait until the end of March when students give notice. At the end of April, many students are leaving, so all sorts of cheap rentals come available for the first of May in areas around the two Universities and the Polytechnic.
