Best Location to Live Advice (Carson, Truckee: income, income tax, living)

Hi guys, I have a question.

I'm an east coaster and I'm considering areas to move to and california happens to be one of them, but i need your help. I don't know the area well and I'm having a hard time finding a location that would suit my situation well.

I'm looking for an area to live that is no more than 30 minutes from either back country skiiable areas or a great resort. But i'd also like it to have atleast 5 acres for horses as well.

I looked into Lake Tahoe and Olympic Valley area but i'm assuming since a state park it didn't have much going for it there.

So, are there any places in northern california that have good land for horses but is pretty close to ski country?

The Truckee / Tahoe area (including "Olympic" Valley .... i'm assuming you mean Squaw Valley? 1960 olympics?) is a big place and there are many, many places to live in the entire area including places east of Truckee and even on the eastern side of the Sierra range heading toward Reno.
For the combination of horse and back country and/or resort i can think of some better states than CA though.

Highways 4 and 88 would probably be suitable. On highway 4, you would probably be looking at Arnold and points west from there. On 88 Pioneer and points west from there.

Also look around the Reno/Carson City, Nevada area. A little lower cost of living than California and no state income tax. Check out Fernley, Minden, Gardnerville and other small towns in the area.
