I know that NYC has a city tax, but California has higher income taxes. At the end of the day, how does it compare when everything's factored?

Overall, New York is more expensive than California but you need to remember that different areas of California have a loser cost of living, just as New York. Housing prices are higher the closer you get to the ocean. Sales tax varies by city and county.

There are four other states, besides New York, where the cost of living is higher. Hawaii, New Jersey (if you can imagine), Alaska, and Washington DC.

When you are looking at total cost to live, look beyond what you pay in taxes.

California
Cost of Living Index: 127.1
Grocery Index: 113.6
Housing Index: 176.7
Utilities Index: 113.6
Transportation Index: 111.1
Health Index: 109.7
Misc.: 106.2 - includes entertainment

New York
Cost of Living Index: 132.2
Grocery Index: 110.6
Housing Index: 193.3
Utilities Index: 106.8
Transportation Index: 112.9
Health Index: 103.0
Misc.: 112.1 - includes entertainment

well the main reason I'm concerned about exact tax figures is because other cost of living aspects don't really impact me (work covers all expenses covered other than rent/taxes). I guess I'm mainly looking at SF vs NYC taxes.

I see. If you're looking for that specific information try googling your question. It works.

You're basing a decision to move on taxes between two of the nation's highest COL cities?

It matters if you're buying or renting, because there is significant difference in property taxes you may not have considered.
