I know Los Angeles' no-overnight parking ordinance was struck down last year, but Santa Barbara may have an ordinance of their own.

Has any parked overnight in Santa Barbara or surrounding areas? How aggressively does the SBPD enforce their ordinance, if they have one?

Sheriff's Dept. hit's it hard around Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito all in S.B. Cty. Santa Barbara had a couple parking locations for homeless living in vehicles. Maybe still does, ask S.B.P.D.

Ventura, right next door, has some parking lots. But they are limited. You can read about it here: Ventura to expand Safe Sleep program for homeless - VC-Star

It is legal to sleep in Rest Areas overnight. There is one in Gaviota: Gaviota Northbound - Santa Barbara County

Santa Barbara Rescue Mission has places to sleep for homeless and meals: http://www.sbrm.org/programs/homeless-guest-services

Thanks for the info!

Are you sure it's legal to sleep in rest areas? The website says:

You May Not:

Camp or pitch a tent.
I'll look into the Ventury Safe Sleep program, but my guess is there's a long waiting list. I called Santa Barbara's Safe Parking Program yesterday and they said the waiting list was three months!

I had no idea when driving out here that it's illegal to sleep in your car I'm from the mid-west and out there people do it all the time while travelling.

You may not camp in a rest stops. The purpose of a rest stop is for keeping the roads safe from those who might fall asleep behind the wheel.
Yes, you can sleep in your car. Some rest stops will have a sign posted saying that there is a 6 hour time limit.

Yep, sleeping in your car is fine: Rest Area Usage Policy

You May:
* Stay up to 8 hours in any 24 hour period.

If you wanted to sleep in a tent there are plenty of campgrounds with showers, etc... That could be another good option. Possibly the best one for you.

When I lived in CO I slept in my car on quite a few occasions while traveling in the mountains on various outings. I think one of the big differences in CA, especially along the more desirable coastal areas like SB, is that they are highly trafficked. With so many people coming to visit and live they just can't have folks sleeping in their cars everywhere. It could easily get out of control. Yet, I think they need to find a balanced approach with more legally designated lots available.

Once you get further up the coast into some of the more remote areas it is not as big of an issue. I have slept in my car/van along Big Sur, for example, without incident. Of course, there is a national forest (Los Padres) here as well.
