Hi,

A quick question about access to codeine access in California and USA.

I've been told i have to go to a GP in the USA to get a prescription for any medication that contains codeine. Is this true?

In Australian pharmacies you can buy paracetamol tablets with codeine (4mg, 8mg and 15mg) over the counter. If you require paracetamol with 30 mg codeine, you need a prescription from a doctor.

Same with Ibuprofen, 12.5mg codeine and under can be purchased over the counter at a pharmacy.

TIA

Yes, that is true. You will need a prescription from a licensed physician for codeine.

Yes, codeine requires a prescription. I believe this is a Federal regulation, not state.

Wow, that's a hassle having to get a prescription for such small amounts of codeine (especially 4 mg and 8mg tablets). I understand for larger doses.

How much does it cost to go to the GP?

TIA

Just depends on which Doctor you go to and what insurance you have. A typical office visit for a brand new patient can be 100 bucks or so. Once you are established the charge is typically less for routine visits.

If your current doctor thinks Naprosyn can work, that's available over the counter here in smaller doses in Aleve and generic brands. Don't switch medicine without consulting your doctor though.

Codeine is a federally scheduled, controlled substance. Get thee to a doctor.

$100!!!! OMG. I pay $60 to see my GP and Australian Medicare gives me approx $32 + back. That's with no private health insurance. With some issues/people Doctors will "bulk bill" which means Govt pays whole amount for you. Wow! We will have private health insurance, just don't know the ins and outs of it yet. Cheers everyone.

Some chain phamacies have clinics where you can be seen "on the cheap" and there are also free-standing, walk-in clinics. Try one of those.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the medical/pharma industry.

That's for an initial consultation and whatever else code 90 whatever that we use over here. Follow up visits are often cheaper, actually in line with what you pay there. Without the giveback though if you don't have insurance.

If you have private insurance, the Dr typically bills over here now. Or it's an HMO and you go and pay a 5 or 10 co-pay.

I don't think 80-20 plans are typical anymore.
