My moving date is fast approaching. I will be moving on May 22nd, and have no large items that need to be taken with me. I've been sending out CVs and doing a few follow-ups. It hasn't been great, but it has been better where I am not by far. There is no staying in Quebec for me. I was initially fairly dead-set on relocating to Winnipeg, but I am starting to think Alberta or Halifax might be better. I also initially considered smaller towns in Ontario, but I'm just not a fan of that province and would rather steer clear.
Does anyone have any insights on the differences between the three cities? I would really appreciate it. Likewise, if you know of any centers that are looking to hire an enthusiastic young man, I love to hear your suggestions.
Alberta isn't a city, it's a province. What city are you thinking about in Alberta? Halifax is a nice small coastal city. Winnipeg is a nice, small prairie city. Winnipeg has a nice family feel and the economy is better there than in Halifax.
I stayed in Winnipeg for about six months a while back, and really liked that city. The people are very friendly.
Mind you, I wasn't there during the winter. Still, I'm a Quebecer, as I assume that you are, and we are used to harsh winters. People from The 'Peg told me that it wasn't a 'damp cold' but a 'dry cold', and that there was a big difference.
Summers there were fantastic, though, so there is probably some truth to it. I didn't have to keep wiping sweat off my schmuss due to humidity, though it was warm and sunny.
I have only passed through Calgary. Something about that town, I can't put my finger on it...the few people I met were nice enough, but there was something about Calgary I wasn't crazy about. I imagine I'd have to try again.
Never been to Halifax, though it's on my bucket list.

Yup, but Winnipeg can get humid some days too. And it gets occasional thunderstorms which is awesome too. There are many lakes and beaches nearby for those hot, humid days.
Some props to Halifax. Even though its small its got a nice urban core and good amenities for its size. The people are friendly and love their bars Its also in a beautiful Province so the road trips are just amazing. I love the rugged coast, seafood and of course the people. There's even some nice beaches there. If I ever want to settle down in a smaller Canadian city, I think that would be Halifax.
All said and done though, if making a living is important and you can't get a job where you want - real life dictates you move to where you can get gainful employment. I'd love to retire at 40 and move to Bangkok and sell cheap crap sunglasses or umbrellas to dumb tourists, but its probably not going to provide the lifestyle I want.

All the best,
#1 Pick -Winnipeg is not small, it has over 700,000 citizens, and it is a beautiful city, and is one of the fastest growing economies in Canada with more than 2 percentage points higher GDP than the national average. They are a large manufacturing district. Winnipeg area is a playground for water sports, nature activities like hiking, camping, sport fishing and in winter hockey, skating, et al.
I don't recommend my home province of Alberta anymore, the economy has crashed since oil prices took at dive. Every where you go communities are crumbling, loads of bankruptcies, and closures. It's really a bad time to be here. There is nothing really beautiful about Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Grande Prairie that sets them above the rest. In the capital city Edmonton's river valley comprises over 20 major parks and attractions and forms the largest expanses of urban parkland in Canada.
Halifax has been hit by the closure of Imperial Oil's Dartmouth refinery but there are still good jobs in oil exploration and supporting businesses and in offshore oil production, in this famously stunning port city.

Winnipeg has a small city feel which I like. I love Winnipeg, it's my hometown. I currently live in Calgary and I agree, I don't recommend mving here especially with the economy now. At the moment, Winnipeg is best for jobs out of the three.
What is your line of work? This would help people here help you
I currently work in Customer Service in a call Center. However, I do not want to continue down this route. I have a degree in criminology and would like to work in a Halfway house, community center, and or for a not for profit in the form of security, counselor, or case worker. Alternatively, I was considering prison guard

Sorry. I was thinking about Edmonton or Calgary, but more so Edmonton because I have heard it had a thriving job market. Granted, I believe of late it has taken a hit. Not to mention the thriving seems to be focused in oil, but I simply want to find an entry level position in my field, or a field with a strong career track.

Thank you for the advice. I think my strongest chances of employment are in Winnipeg. I am still considering Halifax as well. I have some savings that I hope will last me while I search. My main problem now is finding an apartment for rent that would be great for traveling wherever needed in Winnipeg.
Someone I work with is from there and he recommended St Boniface. The prices in that area looked kind of high though. Also, he said do not live in the North end.
Do you have a car? Bus service isn't that great in some areas of Winnipeg.
