Patrick Brown resigns as Ontario PC leader after sexual misconduct allegations - Toronto - CBC News

Just out today. Kind of a bomb shell out of the blue, and will have long term repercussions to politics and society in Toronto and Ontario, given that the PCs and Brown personally have been leading the polls as Ontario approaches the June 2018 provincial election.

Several personal observations:

1. I commend Brown and the PCs for dealing his sexual misconduct allegations in a mature and calm manner. Brown resigning as PC leader is probably the most prudent thing to do for his party, in contrast to the Orange Man in the White House who stuck around despite 19 pending sexual assault investigations.

2. This cannot come at a better time for Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, who has been trailing Brown in polls for the June election.

3. It seems that PCs have an innate ability to torpedo their electoral success and self destruct, right before every provincial election. Sincerely hope that the PCs will be able to find a competent and mature party leader going into the next election, someone with serious policy proposals and demeanor of a civil and respectful provincial politician, like Patrick Brown himself.

<respectfully snipped for space>
I find it shocking that careers are destroyed with allegations rather than trials, but I am beginning to understand that trial often results in delays, victim blaming, and minor consequences. Perhaps the only way to make it stop is for allegations alone to topple someone. If it is a mistake, there is plenty of time to take a slander case to court and win big, equivalent to loss of big earnings.

These were some serious allegations and the timing was particularly brutal. I'm not sure the veracity of the allegations but for Brown's entire inner circle to resign en masse and so quickly leads me to believe that there is probably some traction. Due process is absolutely warranted in this as is the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. That said, for a political leader in the world of politics and optics, this would have created a huge cloud over Brown and I don't think it would have been in the PC's best interest to allow him to remain as leader.

All said, we should as a society not be so quick to allow journalists and the media to convict a person in the halls of public opinion. Take allegations seriously sure, but never just submit to an allegation until it has been investigated and proven.

To point 1 brown dealing with it in a calm manner. Did you see that press conference. It will be used for generations as a how not to deal with serious allegations of sexual misconduct. I think ultimately he made the right decision, probably due to ENORMOUS pressure from his inner political circle and the PC Caucus at large and not necessarily because he wanted to.

To point 3.. I agree.. I actually read weeks ago before all this some liberal insider saying that this election is Patrick Brown and the PC party to lose (huge advantage in polls) and..... they will

As for Brown himself, despite being ahead in the polls there were always concerns by many in not just the Ontario PC party but in the PC organization at large in the country that Brown was a little 'jejune'

Might be a blessing in disguise....I never liked Brown, seemed a bit off to me.
I always kept thinking they could have picked a better leader ....and now they can!

Though PC’s seem to like shooting themselves in the foot.
Back in 2008 John Tory could have easily beat Dalton McSquinty but made that major
faux pas with that faith based schools nonsense.

Yeah I had similar feelings about Brown and certainly had no love at all for Hudak. I don't know where they unearth these guys. Tory was alright though I have mixed feelings about him as Mayor of Toronto. I think he could have been a lot more bold than he has been. Right now though, i'm inclined to think that if the Tories don't put in someone with some backbone and they elect someone who is obscure and unknown, advantage is with Wynne.

Like a bad hemorrhoid that won't go away - here we have another Ford rising within the political realm of Ontario. Doug Ford, elder brother of the late and infamous Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is now leader of the PC party of Ontario. If recent polls are to be believed - this guy could be the next Premier of Ontario. Who did I p**s off in a previous life to deserve this fate lol....

I dunno Fusion but I sure wish you'd stop doing that.

What about this scenario of Ontario politics being in such a state that we're essentially picking from a litter of awful zombies the one with the freshest sores to lead us being vaguely familiar to.......guess...?

No one with any solid moral or ethical grounding is willing to subject themselves to the clusterflop of scrutiny by a media digging into their underwear drawer so it falls to those who crave the big chair for no other reason than what it does for them.

We really need to question this leadership convention process and how delegates are selected to pick our prom kings/queens.

The Ontario PC convention is over, and a leader has been chosen? Good. I don't care who was chosen; it's over.

Now, can we get back to matters of truly national importance? We who are not in Ontario have been subjected to this Ontario PC party crap on our newscasts for the last few weeks, and we'd like to see national news. Not Ontario news. National news. Like what happens in Ottawa and elsewhere internationally, not Toronto. I'm sure Torontonians and Ontarians care, but it all means nothing to me here in Alberta.

CBC, CTV, Global, the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, and all others who purport to be national--stop with the Ontario PC party news. The 20,000,000 Canadians who do not live in Ontario don't care about Ontario's PC party.

'Nuff said for now.

Chevy, I feel your pain. We here in the "center of the universe" are fed up beyond belief this was such a big deal for so long.

Kinda like one of those very expensive fireworks you buy to be the climax of a backyard display and it fizzles without even getting off the ground. The kids are all going......"is that the best you could do?"

Doug Ford.....the mind boggles!

I'll get in before others ......How long do you think it will be before press pundits start referring once again to "Ford Nation"? Gaaaaah!
