I would have been more interested and open to what he had to say if he had remained neutral, polite and factual, rather than biased, insulting and opinionated.

If you filter out the opinions of the author it does provide a not-so-bad account of some things that are going on right now. It remains to be seen how far Canadians will go with populism.

The author is a ****.

Populism can come in many shades, and I would argue that the election of Trudeau in the first place was populism. Coming from the staid, boring, traditional Conservatives to an inexperienced dynamic "young" leader is an exercise in populism as well. It's only become twisted in the hands of Americans that populism implies far right malcontents.

That's a very good point.

Arguably, Canada's first populists (of the modern era at least) were the lefty CCF that later became the NDP.

Well it's because actually calling CCF what they were, which was socialists/borderline communists would make the American readers clutch their pearls and knickers while praying for the Cheeto to save them. So they're leftys.

Worth noting that the "greatest Canadian" moniker has been attributed to Tommy Douglas, the stalwart CCF member first winning a seat in Parliament in 1935 and go on to champion Medicare planting the seed that would later grow into our current single payer system.

An interesting youtube:

Can you imagine giving up a seat in Federal Parliament to return to Provincial politics, take charge and immediately discharge the debt by among other methods; your cabinet taking a pay cut? Can you see that happening in today's politics?

Prescient Tommy?

They were social democrats and in no way we're borderline communists. Communism is one form of socialism and one form only.

I would think that in Alberta both the United Farmers of Alberta and the early days if the Social Credit parties were populist movements. The UFA is still operating but instead of being the government they now sell fuel, gloves and binder twine whereas the Social Credit party is a very far right Christian party that gets few votes.
