EVANSTON, Ill., June 3 (UPI) -- Cancer survivors suffer problems with pain, fatigue, sleep, memory and concentration three to five years after treatment has ended, U.S. researchers say.

"We were surprised to see how prevalent these symptoms still are," study co-investigator Lynne Wagner, an associate professor of medical social sciences at Northwestern University, said in a university release Friday.

Too bad that a lot lose their health insurance.

There's a lot of support for people fighting cancer but after they've been treated; whether it's chemo/radiation or having something like their stomach removed; there isn't much support.

I know a gal who had her stomach removed about 18 months ago; she went to Mayo for a 2nd opinion because she's not able to eat/drink & she doesn't "qualify" to stay in their discounted or free lodging even though she's broke financially.

I am a 11 yr. breast cancer survivor age 59. Only lumpectomy, not mastectomy. Chemo/radiation...the works.
I have also been single for about that long.
It's like all the energy and ability to live life like I used to has been sucked right out of my body.
I had to retire early from 27 yrs of teaching and 13 yrs of real estate because the stamina is just not there.
It doesn't mean that I want to be alone the rest of my life. I'm only 59 for goodness sakes.
Dating sites are a joke...I don't do the bar scene anymore...left that life a long time ago.
What and where do people who have had a serious illness go to find companionship and love again.

Someone please help! I am blessed to be cancer free but my positive outlook is being replaced by crying all the time now because of the loneliness.

Not all dating sites are a joke. That's the way it's done now. I met my sig. other on one. I used to be on several and I dated a lot of guys until I found the one I wanted. Gotta be patient.

My boyfriend left me halfway through my cancer treatment, but I was shocked that when I reopened my online dating profile (on OKCupid) with a clear notice at the top that I'm undergoing chemotherapy for the next 4 months that I still get people who are interested. And I'm only 23 - so these are young guys who could find something objectively "better" for the time being.

Please go to therapy. I'm in intensive therapy that will last long after I am done with chemo because of the way cancer has effected everything about me.
