I had my yearly mammogram because I have a terrible history of breast cancer in my family. I am 48 and for the first time they called to tell me I need to come back for an ultrasound on my right breast. I am feeling really nervous now. Anyone have any experience with ultrasounds? Does it mean they saw cancer?
I was called back after my first mammogram at age 35, and I know how upsetting it can be. In my case it was a cyst that had already shrunk quite a bit by the time I had the ultrasound. My Dr told me that's usually want these things are.
Now, I only hope for the same outcome with the cysts they just found on my ovaries. I'm in "wait and see" mode right now and will be having another sonogram in 4 weeks to see if they are are shrinking. I'm thinking positively and you should too!
I have to go for breast ultrasounds every 6 months due to some benign breast conditions I have. The ultrasound isn't too bad--you lie on your side and the radiologist or tech puts the ultrasound goo on your breast. Then they put the transducer on it and find the area of concern. You will hear some beeping as they find the spot and size it. They will usually show you the area on the ultrasound. My advice would be to try to get a radiologist to do the ultrasound, that way you will know the results right then and there, rather than a tech doing it and having to tell the radiologist the results, who then has to tell you.

Only 1 in 10 on average are cancer so don't worry. With a strong family history you are smart to keep a check on your health. Wishing you the best of luck. Please let us know how it goes. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
I had one too, it means they want to be as thorough as possible. LIke Bass said, it wasn't bad at all. LIke Clevedark said, after having it done, it was hard for them to know for sure and we had some decisions to make, I had surgery and all went well.
Oh yes, the waiting drives you insane, especially if you're as impatient as I am (or was) lol
but let's hope that the ultrasound shows nothing cancerous for now.
Just wanted to thank everyone who wrote in & encouraged me. I was able to get in early for the ultrasound due to a cancellation. Everything is okay but they did find two small cysts. Going back in 6 mo for a follow up to see if they are growing. But, all is fine. Thanks again everyone.
