Hi,

For professional reasons, I'm going to move to San Francisco for 3 months. I come from Europe and I'm not a US citizen. As I will have tens of meetings and appointments across the Valley, I plan to buy a car...and I need a full coverage to lower risks.

My question is simple: how there specifics for foreign people when subscribing to a car insurance?
For example, if I choose a full coverage (physical damage, liability, collision) will I be charged additional fee as a foreign worker? I read this post about living costs in SF SF cost of living - San Francisco - Oakland - California (CA) - City-Data Forum but I couldn't find an accurate answer yet.

Any idea of car insurance companies that might be specialized in short-term contracts in the valley?

Thank you for your help!,
Ben

Hopefull I won't have to subscribe for a whole year. Otherwise I'd better rent a car for 3 months!

Renting would be cheaper and more convenient than buying a car with full coverage then selling it after only 3 months.

Car insurance generally works on a 6 month basis. But can be billed monthly and whenever you cancelled it you would either get a refund if you paid the whole 6 months ahead(usually at a slightly cheaper rate) or just not have to pay the next month if billing monthly.

But I agree, likely cheaper and more practical to just do a long term rental than mess with the hassle of buying/insuring/registering as a non-resident/selling.

do you have experience with renting a car in the US? Do you know the price you find online does not include the insurance?

Renting a car and buying their insurance can get expensive.

About my last rent two months ago in San Francisco: with a $40 basis / day, the full coverage added a $20 fee!
