I'm in the army and currently stationed in Hawaii. Specifically in Oahu. I'm about to buy a used 2014 Ford Mustang. I have an excellent driving record and credit score and the car has a very good history. I'm looking to get full coverage for myself and other possible drivers of my car at a fair price. My question is, will I be better off looking at local insurance companies or try the national chains like Geico or State Farm to find the best deal possible?

The best quality insurance available for a soldier or sailor is through USAA.

GEICO or State Farm may offer a better rate, I don't know. However, all insurance companies are not equal and USAA is among the best when it comes to claims service and customer satisfaction.

Not sure about better deal, but you should consider traveling as part of the military. Do you want to sign with a local insurance and then get transferred or discharged? I was in the Navy for 8 years in the 90s. Consider a national company. A national company will allow you to bring your policy with you in any state. If you get deployed and put your vehicle in storage, you’re more easily able to modify your policy for storage insurance until you return. This will reduce your monthly rate. Prior to returning from deployment, contact your agent to restore your default policy so you will be covered for driving when you return,

Start here to get an idea:
Hawaii.gov - Motor Vehicle Premium Comparison Consumer Complaints Guide 2018

You also have to be prepared that some of the carriers may not sell a new policy. They continue to insure existing policyholders who now moved to Hawaii from the mainland with their insured vehicle, but they wont issue new to a new policyholder.
