I've held four of the stray kittens now without any problems. The black male I can hold seems to play dead when I pick him up. I'm not hurting him. He's fine. The other kittens will put their tail between their legs and look at me like they're scared. This little kitten does put his tail between his legs, but his legs are relaxed and he lays his head back as far as he can, like he's not using his neck muscles at all.
Is there a reason he seems to play dead? I guess it's a good thing, because he doesn't bite or scratch. Is this a defense mechanism, or is he just comfortable enough with me to relax?
By the way, we're getting into summer, so don't forget to leave water for your outside cats and make sure they have some shade. It's ridiculously hot out there.
Puppies and kittens turn limp when their mothers pick them up by the scruff of their necks, that is normal. I think that kitten is just responding in the same way.
He's relaxed. I have had quite a few cats lie on my legs, on their backs, with their necks totally exposed; in fact, my cat sleeps like this often. Take it as a compliment. He is giving you an indication of submission and relaxation, which is something that they do when they trust you.
2 of my 3 cats do this too! They like being held like a human baby and sometimes even reach their paws up to my face and "caress" it, LOL! I definitely take this as a compliment, and feel quite honored when they look to me with those "mommy, I love you" eyes...cutest thing ever!!!
